New research reveals that individuals who come off blockbuster slimming jabs like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain reduced body mass much more quickly than those who end traditional lifestyle regimens.
Findings released in a leading medical journal points out that while overweight people frequently drop about a fifth of their body weight while on the medication, the weight returns at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.
"Users buying these medications need to be informed of the potential of rapid rebound weight gain when the medication concludes," stated researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of regain suggests a reversion to pre-treatment weight in about a year and a half.
Comparing Therapies
The study, which looked at dozens of studies involving over 9,000 of participants, compared the results of the injectable medications with older methods.
Researchers emphasize that individuals who lose weight through dieting typically have a less rapid creep back—approximately 100 grams monthly—after stopping.
Explaining the Quick Regain
Doctors believe the mechanism of the drugs accounts for the accelerated weight return.
These medications copy a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate feelings of fullness.
"Long-term administration of the hormone concentrations far above than normal might result in the system to generate a reduced amount of its own natural hormone, and may also reduce sensitivity to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.
"Withdrawal of this medication leads to appetite is no longer kept in check, making excessive eating much more probable."
An Ongoing Issue?
Medical guidelines advise the injections for individuals with obesity-related health risks, accompanied by recommended diet and exercise modifications.
Professionals contend that, considering the likelihood of relapse, the treatment should be considered life-long.
This opinion is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the findings "emphasize the chronic nature of obesity," comparing it to managing diseases like diabetes.
Patient Accounts
Individuals who have discontinued the jabs explain a sudden resurgence of hunger.
"It was like a switch flipping and you become ravenous," recalled one woman.
This difficulty is worsened if patients have not developed lasting dietary or behavioural changes during therapy.
Widespread Use
Figures indicate that millions of adults in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with demand continuing to grow.
- Use is more common among women than males.
- The middle-aged demographic shows the highest usage rates.
- Many obtain the medications through private prescriptions rather than public health services.
Finally, clinicians caution that while these medications are powerful tools for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone fix and long-term success hinges on integrated lifestyle management.
